One of the most horrible manifestations of old age is the degradation of the mind. The first one to fall victim to it is empathy. Apparently, as people get closer to death they tend to cling tighter to life and in the process they become more and more selfish, more self-absorbed and totally blind to anyone/anything outside their own well-being.

Or it could be that older age works like alcohol - quantity accumulates and one’s true inner is revealed.
